Government Promises Major Road Improvements Within 18 Months

The government says residents can expect significant upgrades to the nation’s road network over the next 18 months as it accelerates a shift toward climate-resilient concrete roads.

Speaking at a town hall meeting in St John’s Rural South, Prime Minister Gaston Browne acknowledged public frustration over road conditions but said major improvements are underway.

“Within the next few months to probably 18 months, you should see a significant improvement in the road infrastructure within our country,” Browne said.

He noted that while many residents have grown impatient, the scale of deterioration inherited over the years requires sustained investment and time to correct.

“Practically all the roads were bad when we came to government,” Browne said, adding that the administration has mobilized substantial resources to address the backlog.

The prime minister said the government is prioritizing concrete roads designed to withstand heavy rainfall and climate-related damage, as part of a broader push for climate-resilient infrastructure.

Concrete paving has already begun in several communities, and officials say the approach is intended to reduce long-term maintenance costs and improve durability.

Browne said that while progress may not be as rapid as some residents would like, the administration remains committed to completing upgrades across both major thoroughfares and residential areas.

The remarks come amid continued public concern about road quality, flooding and pothole damage across parts of the island.
