A man has been found guilty by a jury of indecently assaulting a woman and attempting to choke her during a confrontation at her home in August 2022.

Jurors delivered the verdict this week after hearing two very different accounts of the incident involving a 48-year-old complainant and the accused, who was 34 at the time.

The woman told the court the man came onto her property uninvited while she was outside and later refused to leave. She testified that after she declined his requests for drinks and money, he touched her inappropriately and forced her into the kitchen, where he demanded sex. When she resisted, she said he grabbed her by the neck.

She managed to get him outside by asking him to turn off a washing machine and then locked the door. However, CCTV footage shown to the jury captured the man entering the house again through the front door after reaching through the louvres to unlock it.

The footage later showed the woman running from the yard while calling for help as the man followed behind her.

A neighbour who heard the cries went to the property and told the man to leave before assisting the woman, who had fallen in the yard.

Taking the stand in his defence, the accused claimed the pair had arranged to meet for sex in exchange for money and that a dispute broke out when they disagreed about where in the house the encounter would take place.

The jury rejected his explanation and returned guilty verdicts on both charges.
