A public picket demanding justice following the death of Rashawn “Turtle” Shabazz at His Majesty’s Prison will be held Thursday, August 20.
The demonstration begins at 8:30 a.m. outside the prison and Ministry of Legal Affairs.
Shabazz, 35, died after a police-assisted extraction from his cell on July 23, during which rubber bullets and tear gas were reportedly used.
His father, Khalid Shabazz, has questioned why his son was imprisoned despite alleged court orders for him to be housed at Clarevue Psychiatric Hospital.
Organisers are demanding accountability and are also calling for the resignation of Superintendent of Prisons Lieutenant Colonel Trevor Pennyfeather and the removal of Justice Minister Steadroy “Cutie” Benjamin.
