Tropical Storm Cristobal formed over the central subtropical Atlantic on Wednesday, becoming the third named storm of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season.

The National Hurricane Center said in its 3 p.m. GMT advisory that Cristobal had maximum sustained winds of 45 mph, with higher gusts.

The storm was centered near latitude 36.7 North, longitude 43.0 West, about 880 miles west of the Azores. It was moving rapidly east at 25 mph.

Forecasters expect Cristobal to turn toward the east-northeast and slow down later Wednesday and Wednesday night.

The storm is not expected to pose a threat to land. There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect, and the NHC listed no hazards affecting land.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 90 miles from the center.

Cristobal is also expected to be short-lived. The NHC forecasts gradual weakening, with the system expected to dissipate Thursday.

Its minimum central pressure was estimated at 1008 millibars.

The next complete advisory is scheduled for 9 p.m. GMT Wednesday.
