The government has unveiled its programme of activities for Antigua and Barbuda’s 45th anniversary of Independence, promising celebrations spanning culture, entertainment, education, sport, community engagement and national reflection.
Sports and Creative Industries Minister Dwayne George announced the programme during the official launch of the anniversary celebrations at Government House.
Antigua and Barbuda will mark 45 years of independence on Nov. 1, 2026.
George said the activities are designed to go beyond entertainment and provide opportunities for citizens to reconnect with their national identity and strengthen the bonds that unite the country.
“These activities are not intended merely to entertain,” George said. “They are opportunities to reconnect as a people, celebrate what makes us Antiguan and Barbudan, strengthen national pride and reinforce the bonds that unite us.”
He said organizers intend for the celebrations to include people across generations and communities, including residents of both Antigua and Barbuda and nationals living overseas.
“Our Independence celebrations must belong to everyone. From our children to our elders. From Antigua to Barbuda. From our citizens at home to Antiguans and Barbudans throughout the diaspora,” George said.
The celebrations are being held under the theme, “Renaissance Rooted in Pride, Bounded by Prosperity for All.”
George encouraged citizens to participate in the activities, fly the national flag, support local athletes, artists, musicians, cultural practitioners and creative entrepreneurs, and teach younger generations about the country’s journey since independence.
He said the 45th anniversary should serve both as a celebration of the country’s achievements and an opportunity to consider its future.
“Independence is not simply something we inherited,” George said. “Independence is something every generation must renew.”
