A small craft warning is in effect for Antigua and Barbuda as hazardous winds and rough seas threaten marine activities through Sunday night.

The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service said open waters will be most affected, with seas ranging from 8 to 12 feet and occasionally reaching nearly 16 feet.

Easterly winds of 17 to 28 mph are expected, with strong gale- or storm-force gusts reaching 43 mph. The strongest winds are forecast between midnight Friday and midmorning Saturday.

Warnings will also take effect at midnight for St. Kitts, Nevis, Montserrat and the British Virgin Islands.

The conditions could cause vessels to capsize or sustain damage, disrupt sea transportation and search-and-rescue operations, and lead to injuries or loss of life.

Small craft operators are advised to remain in or near port, seek safe harbour and secure their vessels. Forecaster Dale Destin urged mariners to continue monitoring official weather updates.
