Harold Lovell, the United Progressive Party (UPP) candidate for All Saints West, is questioning the management and transparency of the government’s reported $100 million road rehabilitation programme, arguing that the scale of spending does not match conditions on the ground.

Speaking on Observer Radio’s Night at Night , Lovell said widespread complaints from residents about deteriorating community roads prompted him to examine how the programme is being executed.

“We hear that they have a hundred million to spend,” Lovell said, contending that despite that reported allocation, many residential roads remain in poor condition.

He argued that the government appears to be concentrating on major highways and highly visible corridors while village and inner-community roads continue to deteriorate. According to Lovell, the issue is not simply about fixing isolated sections but about the absence of what he described as a coherent, long-term infrastructure plan.

“There’s no plan,” he said, suggesting the current approach appears piecemeal rather than structured.

Lovell also raised concerns about transparency in the awarding of contracts under the programme, alleging that the process lacks sufficient public clarity and oversight. While he did not cite specific contracts, he said the perception of irregularity fuels public skepticism.

The government has previously highlighted significant investment in road upgrades, pointing to longstanding infrastructure challenges and the need for modernization across the island.

Lovell, however, framed the issue as one of national accountability, arguing that large public expenditures must be guided by strategic planning and clear oversight mechanisms.

His remarks come as political activity intensifies ahead of an expected by-election, with infrastructure emerging as a central issue in public discussion.
