Students at Cobbs Cross Primary School are benefiting from a new drip irrigation system aimed at strengthening the school’s agricultural programme and promoting sustainable farming.

The system, supported by the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and partners, is designed to improve water management, increase crop yields and enhance hands-on learning. IICA National Specialist Craig Thomas said the project addresses challenges such as inconsistent rainfall and inefficient watering by delivering water directly to plant roots, reducing waste and supporting healthier growth.

Principal Mae Hypolite, who also teaches Agricultural Science, joined students in installing the system as part of a practical lesson on conservation and environmental responsibility.

Technical support and equipment were provided by GroTech Farms, with training from Bradbury Browne to ensure long-term maintenance. Officials say the system could cut water use by up to 70 percent and pave the way for future eco-friendly initiatives, including rainwater harvesting and expansion of the school garden.
