The U.S. Coast Guard seized 7,250 pounds of cocaine valued at $54.5 million during an operation south of Puerto Rico.

The Coast Guard said the crew of the USCGC Richard Dixon intercepted a suspected drug-smuggling vessel about 50 miles south of Puerto Rico on Aug. 22.

The operation was conducted with assistance from U.S. Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations.

Authorities reportedly found five suspected narco-terrorists and 25 bales of cocaine aboard the 30-foot go-fast vessel.

All five suspects were detained pending further investigation. The vessel was destroyed because it was considered a hazard to navigation.

“I’m constantly humbled by my crew’s dedication,” said Lt. Cmdr. Michael Torgesen, commanding officer of the Richard Dixon.

“We’re proud to serve alongside them as we protect the nation’s maritime borders in the Caribbean.”
