Firefighters responded to XPZ Supermarket on Sir Sydney Walling Highway on Friday morning after a reported electrical fire in the kitchen sent smoke through the building.

The extent of the damage and whether anyone was injured were not immediately known.

The incident comes less than two years after XPZ reopened at the site. Its original building was destroyed in a June 2021 fire that caused an estimated EC$10 million in losses and left dozens of employees out of work. A former employee, Tianzhao “Alex” Feng, later pleaded guilty to arson in that fire.

The rebuilt supermarket opened Oct. 18, 2024. There is no indication that Friday’s incident is connected to the 2021 blaze.
