Construction is set to begin on a new multimillion-dollar primary school in Barbuda, with funding secured through a grant from the Dominican Republic.

Education Minister Daryll Matthew announced the project on Friday, saying the facility will address long-standing space problems at Holy Trinity School, which currently serves nearly 200 students.

Limited classroom space has forced some younger pupils to attend classes at a separate location. The situation became more difficult after Hurricane Irma destroyed several wooden buildings at the school in 2017.

Matthew said the new institution will be a modern, state-of-the-art facility costing several million dollars.

Holy Trinity School has provided primary education in Barbuda for more than a century and remains the island’s only primary school.
