Barbuda’s expanding vehicle population has prompted calls for stronger traffic-management measures as development continues across the island.

Superintendent Elson Quammie, head of the Traffic Department, said significantly more vehicles are being added to Barbuda’s roads, creating a need for controls similar to those operating in Antigua.

“Barbuda is now developing, and there are a lot more vehicles being added to the fleet in Barbuda,” Quammie said during the Browne and Browne Show.

He said traffic measures implemented in Antigua should also be introduced in Barbuda to ensure the island’s road network is properly managed.

Quammie indicated that Barbuda previously recorded relatively few traffic collisions each year but suggested that the numbers have increased alongside the growing vehicle population.

The senior officer did not announce specific measures or provide current figures for registered vehicles and road accidents in Barbuda.

His comments came during a wider discussion about traffic congestion, dangerous driving and the increasing number of vehicles across Antigua and Barbuda.
