The Antigua and Barbuda Airport Authority is moving to acquire two new baggage-handling units to improve reliability and efficiency at V.C. Bird International Airport.

Cabinet was told Wednesday that a Request for Proposal is being advanced for the equipment as the authority seeks to address longstanding baggage-handling challenges, particularly during peak travel periods.

The two units are expected to provide greater redundancy, allowing baggage operations to continue if one unit develops a problem and reducing the risk of significant disruptions.

The procurement is being treated as a priority because of its expected impact on operational efficiency, airport security and the overall passenger experience.

New Airport Authority CEO Kurt Menal provided the update during a presentation to Cabinet.

Menal said the authority also intends to use technology, improved systems and better processes to maximise the efficiency of the airport’s existing facilities as passenger traffic and Antigua and Barbuda’s tourism industry continue to grow.
