Mental Health Antigua and Barbuda is set to introduce new legislation aimed at improving the way people requiring mental-health treatment and intervention are cared for.

The Mental Health Care Bill, 2026 is due to be presented in the House of Representatives on September 18.

Attorney General Sir Steadroy Benjamin told Cabinet the proposed law would update the country’s legal framework for mental-health care and streamline procedures for people requiring intervention.

The changes are intended to reduce delays linked to outdated processes and ensure patients receive appropriate care more efficiently.

The Bill is part of a wider legislative programme covering policing, firearms, forensic services, fire and rescue operations and magistrates’ powers, as the Government seeks to modernise key public institutions.
