The government is considering developing a purpose-built facility for the Second Chance Programme, potentially at the former Ottos School site.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne raised the possibility Saturday during the Browne and Browne Show on Pointe FM while speaking with an administrator of the programme.

Browne recalled an earlier proposal to transform the former school into a permanent home for the initiative. He suggested that the ageing structures could be demolished and the site redeveloped.

“I’m talking about rebuilding it into a purpose-built facility,” Browne said.

The prime minister acknowledged that further discussions would be required before the location could be confirmed.

“Let’s have a discussion, but you need a proper home,” Browne said.

He described the Second Chance Programme as an important educational institution that allows people who did not succeed during their initial years of schooling to earn qualifications and continue their education.

Browne said students from the programme have matriculated into The University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus and completed university degrees.

He described the initiative as a valuable feeder programme for UWI Five Islands.

During the discussion, it was disclosed that the programme currently has more than 300 mathematics students and will continue accepting students until the end of September.

No construction cost, design or timeline for the proposed facility was announced. The government has also not made a final decision on whether the former Ottos School site will be selected.
