Tropical Storm Cristobal has formed over the central subtropical Atlantic, becoming the third named storm of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season, but it poses no threat to the Caribbean.

The system, previously designated AL93, developed well west-southwest of the Azores, beating the tropical disturbance being monitored farther south, AL92, to the name Cristobal.

At 3 p.m. GMT Wednesday, Cristobal was located near latitude 36.7 north, longitude 43.0 west, with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph. It was moving rapidly east at 25 mph. (National Hurricane Center)

Its location and expected movement keep the storm well away from the Caribbean, and there are no coastal watches or warnings associated with the system.

Attention in the region therefore remains focused on AL92, the separate disturbance moving across the central tropical Atlantic.
