Barbuda Caribana 2026 officially opened Thursday evening with organizers and local officials urging residents and visitors to embrace the island’s culture, support local events and celebrate Barbudan identity throughout the festival.

The opening ceremony featured prayers, the national anthem, sponsor acknowledgements, tributes to past queens and live entertainment from New Gen Band and Empress.

Deputy Chairlady Nadia Harris-George, delivering remarks on behalf of Barbuda MP Trevor Walker, welcomed attendees under the festival theme, “A Cultural and Rhythmic Shift.” She described the theme as a push to elevate Barbudan traditions while embracing a new era for the island’s culture.

“It’s about taking our rich Barbudian heritage — our soul-stirring calypso, our pulsing soca, our legendary hospitality, and our deep community bonds — and pushing them into a bold new era,” Harris-George said.

She highlighted major festival events including the June Eclipse of Monarch, Seafood Festival, Caribbean Classic Horse Race, Jouvert and Last Lap celebrations.

A representative of the Barbuda Caribana Committee also called for stronger public support for local cultural events, saying the festival represents the island’s “identity, history, resilience, and pride.”

“Caribana is ours. No one else can tell our story the way we can. No one can celebrate Barbuda the way Barbudans can,” the speaker said while encouraging residents to attend events, support vendors and celebrate local traditions.

During the ceremony, organizers also honored past Caribana queens including Asha Frank, Kerrianne Walbrook and Cynthia Harrigan for their contributions to the festival’s pageantry tradition and cultural legacy.

The ceremonies were later officially declared open before entertainment performances began.
