The government is exploring the development of a high-end mega yacht marina at Barnacle Point as part of its push toward expanding luxury tourism offerings, Prime Minister Gaston Browne said.

Speaking during an ABS interview, Browne confirmed that discussions are underway but said no agreement has yet been finalized.

“It is exploratory,” he said, adding that he preferred not to disclose the name of the potential fixed-base operator involved at this stage.

According to Browne, the proposed development would cater to large luxury yachts that typically serve high-net-worth clientele. He noted that cabins on some of these vessels can command nightly rates of “30 to 40,000 euros a night.”

The prime minister said the project would require significant supporting infrastructure, including high-end restaurants and amenities comparable to those found in established luxury destinations.

“These yachts do not wish to be in St. John’s. They do not wish to be in English Harbour,” Browne said, explaining that the concept is to create a purpose-built space in the Barnacle Point area designed specifically for ultra-luxury vessels.

He indicated that the area has already been identified by the government as suitable for accommodating large vessels, including LNG ships, making it strategically viable for marina expansion.

Browne said the development would likely require between US$20 million and US$30 million in investment to build out the necessary facilities. While funding options are being explored, he stressed that the proposal remains at the conceptual stage.

“As it stands now, it’s just an idea with some land there and a little small facility,” he said.

The marina proposal aligns with the administration’s broader strategy to shift Antigua and Barbuda further into the high-end tourism market, targeting luxury travelers and associated investment.
