A magnitude 4.0 earthquake was recorded in the Eastern Caribbean this afternoon, according to the Seismic Research Centre (SRC) of The University of the West Indies.

The tremor occurred at 1:24 p.m. local time (17:24 UTC) on Saturday.

Preliminary data indicate the quake was located at latitude 16.85N and longitude 62.74W, at a depth of 10 kilometres.

It was measured about 49 kilometres south of Basseterre, St Kitts and Nevis; 59 kilometres west of Brades, Montserrat; and 103 kilometres west-southwest of St John’s, Antigua and Barbuda.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The SRC noted that the location was automatically generated by computer algorithms and may be revised after further review by analysts.

The Eastern Caribbean is part of the seismically active Lesser Antilles arc, where the Caribbean and North American tectonic plates interact, resulting in frequent earthquakes of varying magnitudes.
