Hazardous sea conditions continue across Antigua and Barbuda as a long-period Atlantic swell pushes wave heights well above normal levels, prompting renewed warnings to coastal users and small-vessel operators.

Climatologist Dale Destin reports that swells of roughly 6 to 10 feet are striking north-facing coastlines, creating dangerous surf and rip currents that are expected to persist through the weekend. He notes that the threat remains elevated even during periods of light or calm winds.

Conditions offshore remain generally navigable, but Destin cautions that nearshore waters are particularly hazardous. Strong rip currents, heavy breaking waves, high surf along exposed beaches and challenging navigation near reefs, shallow areas and harbour entrances continue to pose risks, especially for small craft.

The event coincides with the region’s swell season, when wave energy generated by distant weather systems reaches the Caribbean without obvious local storm activity, often masking the severity of coastal conditions.

Similar impacts are being observed across Atlantic-exposed islands throughout the Caribbean. Authorities are advising swimmers to stay out of dangerous surf zones, urging fishers and small-boat operators to limit nearshore activity, and reminding mariners to follow updated forecasts and official notices.

The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service continues to monitor the evolving conditions and may issue advisories as needed. Destin has encouraged the public to remain alert as elevated surf conditions persist.
