Meteorological authorities have issued a High Surf Warning for Antigua and Barbuda, Anguilla, and the British Virgin Islands, cautioning residents and visitors about dangerous, life-threatening surf and rip current conditions affecting mainly northern and north-facing coastlines.

The warning, issued at 9:25 a.m. Wednesday, December 24, is linked to rising long-period northerly swells and is expected to remain in effect from tonight through Thursday morning or early dawn, with timing varying by island.

Forecasters report seas of 2.4 to 3.1 metres (8 to 10 feet), occasionally approaching 3.7 metres (12 feet). Breaking waves may exceed 2.1 metres (7 feet), with north swells of 8 to 9 feet.

Officials warn that hazardous conditions may result in battering waves, powerful rip currents, coastal flooding, and beach erosion, posing risks to life, property, and marine activities.

Residents are urged not to enter the water along affected coastlines, to avoid rocks, jetties, and exposed coastal structures, and to use west-facing beaches only with extreme caution.

Safety officials advise that anyone caught in a rip current should remain calm, float, and avoid swimming against the current, moving parallel to shore if able.

The public is encouraged to stay informed through antiguamet.com, the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service, and ABS Radio and Television.

The warning was issued by forecaster Letitia Humphreys.
