The government has revised its nationwide tree-planting campaign from one million trees to 300,000 after the Forestry Division advised that the original target was unrealistic, Cabinet spokesman Maurice Merchant said during Friday’s post-Cabinet briefing.

Merchant said forestry officials met with the Cabinet this week and recommended that the initiative be “restructured” to a more attainable figure. He said the government accepted the experts’ guidance and formally adjusted the national goal to 300,000 trees.

According to Merchant, the Forestry Division, the Department of Agriculture and other connected agencies will now lead the revised tree-planting program. He said the adjustment reflects the technical assessment of the agencies responsible for executing the campaign and ensures the initiative remains achievable and properly supported.

The original one-million-tree announcement formed part of the government’s wider environmental agenda, but Merchant said Cabinet agreed that expert advice must guide the scale and pace of national reforestation efforts.
