Antigua and Barbuda has recorded a significant surge in private jet traffic, with arrivals doubling those of commercial flights in 2024. According to Tourism and Aviation Minister Charles Fernandez, the island welcomed 1,847 private jets last year, compared to 824 commercial flights, highlighting the growing dominance of luxury aviation in the country’s air traffic.
Speaking in Parliament, Fernandez noted that the trend has continued into 2025, with January alone seeing 290 private jets arriving in Antigua, outpacing commercial arrivals for the same period.
“The numbers clearly show that private jet travel is playing an increasingly important role in our aviation sector,” Fernandez stated. “This reflects Antigua and Barbuda’s appeal as a high-end destination and reinforces the need for continued investment in private aviation infrastructure.”
The rise in private jet traffic is closely linked to the country’s luxury tourism sector, with high-net-worth travelers opting for private flights over commercial airlines. With exclusive resorts, private villas, and world-class amenities, Antigua has positioned itself as a prime destination for affluent visitors seeking privacy and premium experiences.
Private jet travelers tend to contribute significantly to the local economy, with higher spending on accommodations, dining, and luxury services. Industry observers have noted that Antigua’s reputation as a premier getaway for celebrities, business executives, and ultra-wealthy travelers has fueled the steady increase in private aviation.
To accommodate the rising demand, Antigua and Barbuda has been investing in aviation infrastructure, particularly at V.C. Bird International Airport, where dedicated services for private jet arrivals have been enhanced. The government has also emphasized streamlined customs and immigration processes for private travelers, ensuring a seamless experience.
Additionally, the planned 2,000-foot expansion of the Barbuda airport runway will further support the private aviation sector, allowing for larger aircraft to operate flights directly to the sister island.
With private jet arrivals consistently outpacing commercial traffic, Antigua and Barbuda is strengthening its position as a Caribbean hub for luxury aviation. The government continues to explore partnerships with private aviation operators and expand facilities to meet the needs of this growing market.
