ABFA Criticised Over “sycophantic endorsement” of FIFA President

The Antigua and Barbuda Football Association has come under criticism over a statement strongly endorsing FIFA President Gianni Infantino and praising his leadership of global football.

Inside World Football described the statement as overly flattering and lacking substance, arguing that it places the ABFA at odds with several Caribbean and Concacaf associations that have raised concerns about Infantino’s policies.

The criticism comes months after Ickford “Nyah” Roberts was elected ABFA president in May, defeating Fernando Abraham in the final round of voting. Roberts succeeded Everton “Batow” Gonsalves, who served four consecutive terms after first being elected in 2008.

In its unsigned statement, the ABFA praised Infantino’s “visionary stewardship,” “transformative policies” and investments in grassroots football.

However, Inside World Football argued that some of the funding highlighted by the association existed before Infantino took office and is money FIFA member associations are entitled to receive.

The publication also questioned the ABFA’s support at a time when other football associations are reportedly seeking greater financial support, more opportunities and changes to FIFA’s grant system.

It suggested that the endorsement could alienate the ABFA from Caribbean football officials pushing for reforms and a larger share of football revenue for the region.

The publication described the statement as Roberts’ first major entry into international football politics and questioned whether the position reflects the views of the wider Antiguan and Barbudan football community.

The ABFA has historically played a leading role in Caribbean football and the Caribbean Football Union.
