The government is exploring the development of a solar plant capable of generating at least 30 megawatts as Antigua and Barbuda accelerates its transition to renewable energy.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne said discussions are underway with a Chinese entity that has submitted a proposal for a solar energy project equipped with battery storage.

“We are currently in discussions with a Chinese entity who have given us a quote with battery on a solar energy project, which, based on the price that they quoted, is quite reasonable,” Browne said.

The government is also considering proposals from other suppliers before deciding which arrangement offers the best value.

“We’re speaking to other suppliers as well,” Browne said. “Obviously, we’re going for the best deal.”

Battery storage would allow electricity generated during periods of strong sunlight to be retained and supplied when solar production falls.

Browne said the government expects to intensify its renewable-energy programme within the next 24 months as it gradually reduces reliance on fossil fuels.

The administration initially targeted 2030 for generating 50% of the country’s electricity from renewable sources. Browne acknowledged that deadline may no longer be achievable and said 2035 is now a more realistic target.
