George Lake remembered his father, Dr. Cuthwin Leonard Lake, as a surgeon, mentor, political adviser and devoted servant of the people during an emotional eulogy delivered at the physician’s official funeral on Wednesday.

Speaking before mourners gathered to celebrate the life of the renowned doctor, Lake traced his father’s journey from his birth in Anguilla on May 25, 1930, to a distinguished medical career that left a lasting mark on Antigua and Barbuda and the wider Leeward Islands.

“From those humble beginnings emerged a man whose life and influence would touch countless people across the Caribbean and beyond,” Lake said as he reflected on his father’s upbringing and education in St. Kitts, Canada and England before his recruitment by the government of Premier V.C. Bird to serve as Antigua and Barbuda’s chief surgeon.

The eulogy painted a picture of a man known not only for his medical expertise but also for his wide-ranging interests. Lake described his father as an accomplished athlete who excelled in swimming, cycling and football, a horseman who spent countless mornings at the racetrack, and a musician whose singing and piano playing filled the family home.

He also spoke of his father’s demanding nature, recalling that hospital staff often referred to him as “Brutus” because of the high standards he expected from those around him. Yet, he said, those who worked with Dr. Lake understood that his strict approach stemmed from a commitment to excellence and patient care.

Much of the tribute focused on Dr. Lake’s dedication to healthcare throughout the region. According to his son, he frequently traveled throughout the Leeward Islands, often at his own expense, to perform surgeries and treat patients who otherwise had little access to specialized medical care.

Lake recounted stories his father shared about flying to Anguilla to perform emergency surgeries before the island had electricity. Villagers would line airstrips with vehicles and headlights to guide aircraft to safety, while nurses held kerosene lamps above operating tables to provide light during procedures.

One of the most personal moments of the eulogy came when Lake described a serious childhood accident that left his leg shattered. He told mourners that his father performed the operation himself because no orthopedic surgeon was available on the island at the time. Years later, he learned that Dr. Lake had feared he would be forced to amputate the limb. Instead, he spent hours painstakingly removing every trace of dirt from the wound before successfully saving the leg.

Beyond medicine, Lake recalled his father’s close relationship with the late Sir Vere Cornwall Bird, describing him as one of the premier’s most trusted advisers. He recounted periods when political changes led Dr. Lake to leave Antigua, only to return after being personally invited back by Bird following a change in government.

The younger Lake said his father remained deeply committed to Antigua and Barbuda despite opportunities abroad. He recounted a story in which Sir Vere personally appealed to his mother to persuade Dr. Lake to remain in Antigua rather than accept opportunities in Canada.

“Antigua needs Dr. Lake. We need him desperately,” Lake recalled Sir Vere telling his mother.

Lake said his father’s commitment to service extended beyond the hospital. Patients routinely gathered at his home office seeking medical care, many unable to pay for treatment. Rather than charging them, Dr. Lake often accepted whatever they could offer, including vegetables, livestock and other produce.

After leaving his position in Antigua, Dr. Lake continued his work in medicine and mentorship, spending years in Nevis helping to train younger doctors and provide healthcare services alongside members of his family.

Closing the tribute, George Lake said his father should be remembered not only for the titles and accomplishments that followed his name, but also for his character and commitment to helping others.

“He was my Caesar,” he said. “Let the good and great things that Doc did live after him.”
