LETTER: Urgent Need for Affordable Rental Housing Legislation for Working Citizens – Antigua News Room

Dear Prime Minister, Cabinet Members, and Honourable Members of Parliament,

I am writing to respectfully urge the Government of Antigua and Barbuda to recognize affordable rental housing as a basic human necessity and not a luxury reserved only for those with higher incomes. The current rental market has become increasingly unaffordable for many hardworking citizens, particularly minimum wage workers, and immediate legislative action is needed to address this growing crisis.

Housing is one of the most fundamental human needs. A safe and stable place to live is essential for personal dignity, family stability, physical and mental health, education, and economic productivity. When citizens cannot afford housing despite working full-time jobs, it raises serious concerns about fairness, social equity, and the overall well-being of our society.

Today, many rental prices in Antigua and Barbuda are far beyond the reach of minimum wage earners. Workers in hospitality, retail, security, cleaning services, caregiving, and other essential sectors often find themselves forced to spend a disproportionate amount of their income on rent. In many cases, rent consumes more than half of a worker’s monthly earnings, leaving little money for food, transportation, utilities, healthcare, education, or savings.

This situation places thousands of citizens in a constant state of financial hardship. It creates unnecessary stress on families, contributes to overcrowded living conditions, delays home ownership opportunities, and forces some workers to choose between paying rent and meeting other basic needs. No person who works honestly and contributes to our economy should be unable to afford decent housing.

I respectfully call upon the Government to introduce legislation and policies that specifically address affordable rental housing for low-income and minimum wage workers. Such measures could include:

    1. The development of affordable rental housing projects through public-private partnerships.

    2. Incentives for property owners who offer rentals at reasonable rates to low-income workers.

    3. The establishment of rental assistance programs for vulnerable working families.

    4. Rent stabilization measures in areas experiencing excessive rental inflation.

    5. Housing policies that ensure new developments include units designated for affordable housing.

    6. Regular reviews of minimum wage levels in relation to the actual cost of housing and living expenses.

Affordable housing is not merely an economic issue; it is a matter of social justice and national development. A country thrives when its workers can live with dignity, security, and hope for the future. Teachers, hotel workers, nurses, cashiers, security guards, maintenance workers, and countless others form the backbone of our economy. They deserve access to housing that reflects their contribution to society.

I therefore appeal to the Government of Antigua and Barbuda to treat this issue with the urgency it deserves. The current rental prices being faced by many citizens are unsustainable and, for minimum wage workers, often feel cruel and unreasonable. Meaningful legislation and practical solutions are needed to ensure that affordable housing becomes a reality rather than an unattainable dream.

I thank you for your attention to this matter and hope that decisive action will be taken to protect the welfare and dignity of working people throughout Antigua and Barbuda.

    Respectfully,

    Concerned Citizen

    Antigua and Barbuda
