Antigua and Barbuda’s Parliament is set to formally open its new legislative session on Tuesday with the delivery of the Throne Speech by Governor General Rodney Williams following the swearing-in of senators and members of Parliament last week.
The ceremonial opening of Parliament is scheduled for 9 a.m. at Parliament Building and will mark the official start of the first session of the new Parliament following the April 30 general election, which returned the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party to office for a fourth consecutive term.
The Throne Speech, delivered by the Governor General on behalf of the government, is expected to outline the administration’s legislative agenda, policy priorities and plans for the new parliamentary term.
The event follows last week’s swearing-in ceremonies for both elected members of the House of Representatives and newly appointed senators.
During Wednesday’s Senate sitting, Senate President Alincia Williams-Grant reminded senators that the Throne Speech would be the next major parliamentary session after the Senate’s opening proceedings.
Prime Minister Gaston Browne and members of Cabinet are expected to attend the ceremonial opening alongside parliamentarians, diplomats and other officials.
The proceedings will be carried live from Parliament.
