Prime Minister Gaston Browne has issued a firm warning to members of his newly appointed Cabinet, declaring that there will be “no room for mediocrity” as his administration begins a new term following its decisive victory in the April 30 general election.

Addressing ministers during Tuesday’s swearing-in ceremony, Browne tied the government’s overwhelming mandate—15 of the 17 parliamentary seats—to a heightened obligation to perform, cautioning that the trust placed in them by the electorate must not be taken lightly.

“You have been given a tremendous responsibility,” Browne told the ministers, adding that they must “honour that trust” and ensure they do not “betray the people” who supported them at the polls.

The Prime Minister made it clear that underperformance would not be tolerated, stating that his government must be defined by excellence and delivery. “There must be no mediocrity,” he said, insisting that ministers are expected to operate at the highest level in executing their duties.

Browne emphasized that public office is a duty rather than a privilege, urging Cabinet members to approach their roles with discipline, integrity and a clear focus on results. “You are here to serve the people of this country,” he said, warning that any failure to do so would undermine the confidence voters have placed in the administration.

He also called on ministers to remain united in their approach to governance, noting that collective effort would be essential to achieving national goals. “We must work together in unity,” Browne said, as he encouraged collaboration across ministries to advance development priorities.

Framing the new term as one of transformation, Browne pointed to ongoing and future initiatives aimed at strengthening infrastructure, improving living standards, and positioning Antigua and Barbuda for sustained growth.

The Prime Minister further stressed the importance of productivity, indicating that national progress will depend not only on government action but also on broader societal effort. “You cannot accept mediocrity,” Browne repeated, reinforcing his message that the government must deliver tangible outcomes in response to the mandate it has received.

His remarks set a clear tone for the administration’s fourth term, signaling a results-driven approach and a zero-tolerance stance on complacency as the newly sworn-in Cabinet prepares to begin its work.
