Public health officials in Barbuda have conducted a food safety training session for vendors ahead of the upcoming Caribana celebrations, as authorities seek to reduce health risks during the busy festival period.

The initiative was organised through a collaboration between the Central Board of Health and the Barbuda Public Health Department. Officials said the training was designed to ensure food vendors are properly equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to prepare and serve safe food to the public.

The session focused on key food safety practices, including proper food handling, personal hygiene, safe food storage and temperature control, in line with established public health standards.

Participants were also reminded of the “Five Keys to Safer Food”, which include keeping food clean, separating raw and cooked foods, cooking food thoroughly, keeping food at safe temperatures and using safe water and raw materials.

More than 30 people attended the interactive training, which included discussions and scenario-based learning exercises. Vendors were given the opportunity to ask questions and seek clarification on their responsibilities in protecting public health.

Officials also stressed that all food handlers must possess a valid Food Safety Badge issued by the Barbuda Public Health Department. The badge confirms that vendors have completed the required training and are authorised to operate.

With Caribana festivities approaching, the Barbuda Public Health Department and Barbuda Council are urging vendors to follow food safety guidelines closely to help protect consumers and support the success of the event.

“Food safety is everyone’s business,” the department said in a statement.
