The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services says air quality across the country is expected to fall to moderate levels from Monday afternoon through Tuesday due to increased concentrations of Saharan dust.

In an air quality bulletin issued at 11:45 p.m. Sunday, the Met Office said the decline is linked to the fourth notable surge of Saharan dust affecting the country for 2026. The Air Quality Index is forecast to range between 51 and 80, with an Air Pollution Alert Level II in effect.

The bulletin noted that while health risks will be low for most people, unusually sensitive individuals, including those with asthma, could experience moderate health concerns.

People with respiratory or heart disease, the elderly and children are considered most at risk.

“Air quality is acceptable; however, for some pollutants, there may be moderate health concerns for a very small number of people who are unusually sensitive to air pollution,” the advisory stated.

Active children and adults, along with people who have respiratory conditions, are advised to limit prolonged outdoor exertion.

The Meteorological Service urged the public to monitor updates through antiguanmet.com and its social media platforms, as well as local radio and television stations.
