Delegates from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) are meeting in Hangzhou, China, from February 24-28, 2025, to review key elements of the Seventh Assessment Report (AR7).

This includes draft outlines for reports by the IPCC’s three Working Groups, which will cover the physical science of climate change, impacts and adaptation, and mitigation strategies.

Arry Simon from the Department of Environment is representing Antigua and Barbuda at the session which will also be used as an opportunity to address the IPCC Trust Fund Programme and budget for 2024-2027, as well as plans for expert meetings and workshops.

Small Island Developing States (SIDS) are actively participating in the IPCC process, emphasizing their vulnerability to climate change impacts like sea-level rise and extreme weather.

They are pushing for stronger focus on limiting global warming to 1.5°C, enhanced adaptation strategies, and recognition of loss and damage. SIDS also seek greater inclusion of indigenous knowledge and increased financial and technical support to build resilience.

SIDS expect the AR7 cycle to provide robust scientific evidence to support their calls for urgent climate action.

They hope for detailed assessments of 1.5°C pathways, stronger guidance on adaptation, and equitable deployment of carbon removal technologies.

The IPCC’s work will play a critical role in shaping global climate policies and supporting vulnerable nations in their fight against climate change.
