The proposed relocation of the Barbuda River Port has moved forward following completion of a coastal study, with further assessments underway.
The Antigua and Barbuda Port Authority said the proposed location is a six-acre site on Barbuda’s South Coast, east of the River Dock Peninsula.
A study by Smith Warner International found natural water depths of three to five metres, which could allow cargo vessels to use the site with less dredging.
A feasibility assessment is expected to be completed within two weeks, while geotechnical work is underway to assess ground conditions. A hydrological assessment is also scheduled to begin this week.
The project’s Environmental Impact Assessment is about 70 per cent complete, with the remaining work dependent on results from ongoing surveys.
The Port Authority plans to hold a town hall meeting in Barbuda to present the findings and receive feedback before construction begins.
Detailed design is expected to start after geotechnical results are received. Construction mobilization is targeted for December 2026 to January 2027.
