China will provide 5,000 artificial intelligence training and seminar opportunities to developing countries over the next five years as it expands cooperation in emerging technologies, according to Zhang Peng, Chargé d’Affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Antigua and Barbuda.
Zhang made the announcement during remarks at a reception marking the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
“In the next five years, China will provide developing countries with 5,000 opportunities in AI training and seminar programs,” Zhang said.
He said China also plans to “develop international AI application cooperation centers with the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States and other Global South organizations.”
The initiative is part of China’s push for greater international cooperation on artificial intelligence and its governance.
Zhang said President Xi Jinping has called on countries to “jointly build a just and equitable system for global AI governance.”
He also announced plans to allow 30 countries to use an AI-powered multi-hazard early warning system.
China intends to “enable 30 countries to use the AI-powered” multi-hazard early warning system, Zhang said.
He did not identify the 30 countries or indicate whether Antigua and Barbuda would be among them.
Zhang also used his address to emphasize China’s broader relationship with Latin America and the Caribbean, saying geographical distance has not diminished Beijing’s commitment to cooperation with the region.
“Though China is far away from Latin America and the Caribbean, distance has never diminished our resolve to pursue sincere cooperation,” he said.
