Motorists in Antigua and Barbuda are facing another increase in fuel prices Wednesday, about a month after the last adjustment at the pumps.

Prime Minister and Finance Minister Gaston Browne announced the increase Tuesday, saying higher international energy costs linked to the conflict involving the United States and Iran are putting additional pressure on local fuel prices.

Speaking at a reception at the Chinese Embassy marking the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Browne said Antigua and Barbuda is feeling the economic effects of conflicts taking place far beyond the region.

“When these conflicts take place, even though we are not close to them geographically, the impact on us is disproportionate,” Browne said.

He said the government has been absorbing some of the higher costs but can no longer continue doing so.

“In fact, energy costs are going up tomorrow, unfortunately, as we have no control over it,” Browne said.

The prime minister did not disclose the new prices for gasoline or diesel or say how much motorists will pay following the increase.
