Crossing guards in Antigua and Barbuda are still waiting for their first retroactive payment from the 2018-2020 collective bargaining period, according to Antigua and Barbuda Trades and Labour Union President Bernard de Nully.

De Nully highlighted the outstanding payment during his address to the AT&LU’s 87th Annual Delegates’ Conference, questioning why crossing guards have been left behind while most other non-established government workers have received multiple payments.

“Crossing guards in this country that has such an important responsibility to safely care of our children are still awaiting their 1st retro-active payment for Collective Bargaining period 2018-2020,” de Nully said.

He said the delay stands in contrast to the treatment of most other non-established workers, who have already received their first, second and third payments.

The union president did not state how many crossing guards are affected, how much money remains outstanding or when the payment was originally expected.

De Nully raised the issue as part of a broader criticism of longstanding grievances across the public sector, some of which he said have remained unresolved for between 10 and 20 years.

He pointed to disputes involving workers at the Central Board of Health, Solid Waste and Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre and argued that workers must remain united in pressing for outstanding benefits and improved treatment.

The AT&LU represents more than 10,000 workers across Antigua and Barbuda.
