— Antigua and Barbuda Trades and Labour Union President Bernard de Nully is renewing calls for outstanding pensions owed to Antigua Public Utilities Authority retirees to be paid, insisting that the benefits must be honoured.

De Nully raised the issue during the AT&LU’s 87th Annual Delegates’ Conference, months after workers took to the streets of St. John’s over the pension dispute.

“Pensions within the Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA) are yet to be paid to pensioners,” de Nully said.

He noted that hundreds of workers participated in the protest earlier this year, with the AT&LU leading the demonstration and pressing the central government for a resolution.

“The position of the AT&LU with the consensus of the monthly workers is abundantly clear: Pension must be honoured,” de Nully said.

He argued that retirees should not have to continue fighting for benefits after spending much of their working lives contributing to the utility company.

“Pensioners were once workers and we as a Union must safeguard and protect the livelihood of workers who have vested the majority of their adult life for the success of APUA as a statutory body,” he said.

The pension dispute was among several unresolved labour matters highlighted by de Nully during his address.

He urged workers to remain united in pursuing outstanding benefits and workplace grievances, arguing that collective action remains essential to protecting workers’ rights.
