The Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting breastfeeding and giving babies a healthy start as Antigua and Barbuda observes Breastfeeding Week 2026 from Sept. 21-25.

Ann-Marie Browne-Isaac, chair of the hospital’s Breastfeeding Committee, said the medical centre continues to promote breastfeeding within the first hour after birth and the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding as part of its Baby Friendly Hospital initiative.

She said support must extend beyond the hospital, with government, employers, schools, families and community organisations all having a role to play.

Browne-Isaac highlighted the importance of paid maternity leave and called on workplaces to provide private spaces and flexible arrangements for mothers to express breast milk. Schools and community groups were also encouraged to provide accurate information and support exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of a child’s life.

The committee chair said stronger breastfeeding support can benefit families, workplaces and communities by reducing health and financial pressures and workplace absenteeism.

She also noted that breastfeeding is associated with lower risks of breast and ovarian cancers, childhood obesity and diabetes.

SLBMC said it remains focused on education, collaboration and reshaping conversations around breastfeeding support in Antigua and Barbuda, while encouraging institutions, employers, families and other partners to help mothers continue breastfeeding with confidence.
