The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service says a newly formed low-pressure system in the far eastern tropical Atlantic poses no immediate threat to Antigua and Barbuda.

In its 8 a.m. tropical weather update Wednesday, the Met Office said the area of low pressure had formed about 600 miles southeast of the Cabo Verde Islands.

Forecasters said the system could develop into a short-lived tropical depression on Thursday or Friday.

The disturbance has a 30% chance of developing into a tropical cyclone within 48 hours, increasing to 40% over the next seven days.

The Met Office is also monitoring former Tropical Storm Fay, although redevelopment is considered unlikely. Fay has a 20% chance of redevelopment through both the next 48 hours and seven days.

Forecasters stressed that neither system currently poses an immediate threat to Antigua and Barbuda.
