The Antigua and Barbuda Cabinet says increased policing alone will not solve the problem of youth violence, calling for greater involvement from parents, families and community institutions.

The government says parents must take greater responsibility for supervising and guiding their children, particularly as authorities confront concerns about young people becoming involved in crime and antisocial behaviour.

Cabinet also stressed the importance of early intervention, arguing that problems should be addressed before young people enter the criminal justice system.

Schools, churches and community organizations are being encouraged to play a greater role in providing guidance, mentorship and support to at-risk youth.

The government’s position comes alongside efforts to strengthen law enforcement and review legislation dealing with parental responsibility.

Cabinet maintains that tackling youth violence will require a broader community response, with families and institutions working alongside police to prevent crime rather than relying solely on enforcement after offences occur.
