Repairs to the Burning Flames Highway are being targeted for completion before Antigua and Barbuda hosts the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, Prime Minister Gaston Browne has announced.

Browne said a regional construction firm could begin work on the heavily travelled roadway within weeks.

A bid of approximately EC$8 million has been submitted for the project and is considered reasonable based on estimates prepared by the Public Works Department, according to the prime minister.

“We have a regional firm that should be starting on the Burning Flames Highway very shortly,” Browne said during the Browne and Browne Show. “I think they have put in a bid for about $8 million to repair that road.”

He said the project would “possibly” be completed before CHOGM, although he did not announce a firm construction schedule.

The highway is among several major and community roads identified for repairs as the government expands its road rehabilitation programme.

Browne said work was also required along Anchorage Road and Factory Road, while construction was continuing on community roads in the southern section of Antigua.

The regional contractor was not identified, and the prime minister did not indicate whether the EC$8 million bid had received final approval.

Further details are expected once contractual arrangements are completed and a commencement date is established.
