A female prison officer has been placed on leave as authorities investigate alleged inappropriate conduct involving a male inmate at His Majesty’s Prison in Antigua and Barbuda.

Prison Superintendent Colonel Trevor Pennyfeather said the matter has been referred to the institution’s disciplinary committee and is expected to be heard next week.

He said the allegations relate to the officer’s behaviour and communications with the inmate, but declined to provide further details while the investigation continues.

According to Pennyfeather, the alleged interactions took place over several weeks, and possibly months, before they were discovered.

He said any improper relationship between an officer and an inmate could pose a serious security risk and undermine the safety of the prison.

The officer will remain off duty while the disciplinary process is completed and will have an opportunity to respond to the allegations.

No finding of wrongdoing has been made.
