Students from St. Mary’s Secondary School and Irene B. Williams Secondary School have recorded strong results in the first phase of a new modular mathematics programme introduced by the Caribbean Examinations Council.

CXC Local Registrar Maritza Weste said St. Mary’s Secondary achieved a 96.8 per cent acceptable-grade rate in Module One of the Caribbean Targeted Education Certificate, while Irene B. Williams recorded 86 per cent.

The two schools were selected to participate in the pilot programme, commonly known as CTEK, during the 2025-2026 academic year.

St. Mary’s registered 40 students for the programme, but 32 sat the examination. All 43 students registered by Irene B. Williams completed the module.

“I commend both schools. It is a pilot, it is their first time, and all of their students, with the exception of two, would have passed the exam — Module One,” Weste said.

The participating students completed the module while in third form and are expected to advance to Module Two during fourth form.

CTEK is designed to divide traditional CSEC subjects into smaller, manageable sections, allowing students to complete one module at a time instead of depending entirely on a single examination at the end of fifth form.

Weste stressed that the modular structure does not reduce the academic standard of the subject.

“This is a modular qualification framework, sectioning the traditional subjects like CSEC,” she said. “It is broken up into stackable, manageable modules that students could learn one module at a time without lowering the standards of the course.”

The first mathematics module covers the fundamentals of secondary mathematics, including consumer arithmetic.

Module Two will address intermediate secondary mathematics, including algebra, reasoning and applied measurement. Module Three will cover advanced mathematics topics, including geometry, trigonometry, vectors and matrices.

Students can receive certification for each module they successfully complete. Those who pass all three modules will ultimately receive a CSEC Mathematics certificate and a final grade.

“Once the students pass all three modules, in fifth form or at the end, they will get a CSEC Mathematics certificate,” Weste said. “Whether it’s a Grade Two, Grade One or Grade Three, they will get a pass once they pass all three modules.”

The pilot is intended to provide another pathway for students who may struggle with the pressure and volume of material associated with a single CSEC Mathematics examination.

Education officials said the students’ results would remain on record as they progress through the remaining modules. After all three components are completed, CXC will combine the results to determine each student’s final CSEC grade.
