Patients from Antigua and Barbuda who require prosthetic limbs will now be able to travel to Trinidad and Tobago for treatment under a new healthcare agreement.

Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant said the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre has partnered with the Trinidad and Tobago National Prosthetic Centre to facilitate the assessment and fitting of patients.

“The Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre would have entered into an agreement with the Trinidad and Tobago National Prosthetic Centre,” Merchant said during Thursday’s post-Cabinet media briefing.

“They have entered into an agreement for individuals to travel to Trinidad and Tobago to be affixed with prosthetics, and so that arrangement is now in place for persons to travel to Trinidad,” he added.

Merchant announced the agreement while reporting on a presentation made to Cabinet by the minister of health.

The arrangement is expected to provide access to specialised prosthetic services that may not be readily available locally.

Merchant did not disclose when the first patients would travel, the eligibility requirements or whether the government would cover travel and treatment expenses.
