These youths secured national titles in both the essay and environmental poster categories, while one earned a regional second place distinction, underscoring their remarkable talent and potential.

In recognition of these outstanding accomplishments, a prize presentation ceremony was held yesterday (Thurs) at the Ministry of Tourism Headquarters.

The Hon. Charles Fernandez, Minister of Tourism, personally presented awards to the winning students, commending them for their creativity, environmental awareness, and academic excellence.

Among the national winners was Mckenzi Edwards of New Bethel SDA School, who secured first place nationally in both the junior division environmental poster competition and the Junior essay competition. Edwards received cash prizes of US$200 for each winning entry.

Sophia Cao of St. Anthony’s Secondary School was named the national winner in the senior environmental poster competition, earning a cash prize of US$200.

Adding to Antigua and Barbuda’s success, Kiara Kwenga of Christ the King High School, who is also Antigua and Barbuda’s Junior Minister of Tourism achieved regional recognition by placing second in the regional essay competition. Her accomplishment earned her a Lenovo laptop, while her school received US$1,500.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Fernandez congratulated the students for their exceptional performances and commended them for using their talents to promote environmental stewardship and sustainable tourism.

“The FCCA competitions provide an important platform for our young people to showcase their creativity while developing a deeper appreciation for the protection of our natural environment. These students have represented Antigua and Barbuda with distinction, and we are extremely proud of their achievements,” the Minister stated.

The Environmental Poster and Essay Competitions are annual initiatives designed to engage students throughout the Caribbean in discussions surrounding environmental conservation, sustainability, and the vital role these principles play in the region’s tourism industry.

The Ministry of Tourism, Civil Aviation, Transportation and Investment extends its heartfelt congratulations to the winners, their families, teachers, and schools for their dedication and support, and encourages students across Antigua and Barbuda to continue participating in educational initiatives that promote environmental responsibility and national development.
