Road Network Could Be significantly improved Within 12- 18 Months

Prime Minister Gaston Browne says the country’s road infrastructure could be significantly improved within the next 12 to 18 months, as the government accelerates its ongoing works programme.

Speaking on Pointe FM’s Browne and Browne Show, Browne said the administration has already secured substantial funding to sustain construction efforts across multiple communities.

“Because we have monies committed, at least another $100 million… to continue to build out roads,” Browne said.

He said a strategic decision has been taken to have the Public Works Department take on major projects, including the rehabilitation of All Saints Road, arguing that the approach will reduce costs and improve value for money.

“They’ll be able to do it far cheaper, and I think we’ll get better value for money,” he said.

Browne noted that Public Works is being expanded to meet the demands of the programme, with plans to recruit additional engineers and skilled workers. He said salaries are also being adjusted to attract higher-quality personnel.

The prime minister expressed confidence that the increased capacity will allow the government to address long-standing infrastructure challenges within a defined timeframe.

“We believe that well-equipped Public Works will be able to resolve the country’s infrastructure maybe within the next 12 to 18 months,” Browne said.

He acknowledged that not all roads can be repaired simultaneously but said the pace and scale of the current programme mark a shift in how roadworks are being handled.

“We can’t fix all the roads at the same time… but we have it under control,” Browne added, pointing to what he described as rapid improvements already taking place across the island.

Browne also signaled that the programme is intended to continue regardless of the outcome of the upcoming general election, warning against any disruption to what he called the current momentum in infrastructure development.

The government has been ramping up roadworks in recent months, with projects underway in several communities as part of a broader push to upgrade national infrastructure.
