The government is moving to subsidize air travel between Antigua and Barbuda in response to rising ticket prices and growing concerns over accessibility to the sister island.

Director General for Communications Maurice Merchant said Cabinet has agreed in principle to provide financial support aimed at lowering fares, following a presentation highlighting the burden on residents and travelers.

“The cabinet… acknowledged the urgent need to address the high cost of air travel between Antigua and Barbuda,” Merchant said, noting that recent increases and limited transportation options have “impacted both residents and the economy there on Barbuda.”

He said the government is now preparing to intervene directly.

“Cabinet… agreed that the matter requires immediate attention and meaningful intervention,” he said, adding that an airfare subsidy is expected to “provide much needed relief to the travelers and residents on Barbuda.”

Officials argue that reliable and affordable transport between the islands is essential not only for daily travel, but also for economic activity and access to services.

“Affordable and reliable air transportation between the sister islands is essential for economic action, access to health care and… the overall well-being of Barbudans,” Merchant said.

The subsidy proposal is still being finalized, with Cabinet expected to review detailed recommendations on its structure and cost.

“Mr. Beazer has been advised to prepare and submit a detailed proposal… where a final determination on the quantum… will be made,” Merchant said.

He added that subsidizing travel is a common approach used by governments to ease transportation costs and stimulate movement.

“Providing a subsidy for air travel is nothing new… governments do that from time to time to cushion the cost for its travelers and also to encourage increased travel,” he said.

The initiative comes amid broader development in Barbuda, where officials say improved connectivity is critical to sustaining growth and supporting residents who depend heavily on regular travel between the islands.

The government has said it will provide further details once the proposal is reviewed and approved.
