A jury has convicted Sazeek Joseph of attempted rape and serious indecency following a brief trial in the High Court this week.

The charges stem from an incident on the night of June 8 into the early hours of June 9, 2022, involving a then 18-year-old woman.

Prosecutors told the court that the complainant had arranged to meet Joseph after he offered to assist her with transportation. During the evening, she became uncomfortable with his behaviour and attempted to distance herself.

The court heard that Joseph later returned for her and drove to a secluded area, where he made unwanted advances and used intimidation. The complainant resisted and was able to prevent the assault from being completed.

Evidence presented to the jury included messages exchanged between the two, as well as an audio recording in which Joseph made admissions about his actions. The complainant reported the matter to police the same day.

The jury also heard that Joseph gave differing accounts to investigators and during the trial.

Joseph has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to be sentenced on April 27.
