The Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission says its introduction of transparent ballot boxes is aimed at making the voting process more secure and increasing public confidence in elections.

In a public notice announcing the change, the commission said the new ballot boxes are being introduced “to further strengthen the electoral process and provide a modernized voting experience.”

ABEC said the transparent design offers greater visibility by allowing election officials and observers to clearly see that the ballot box is empty before voting begins and that ballots are securely deposited during the process.

The commission also said the change is intended to build trust in the electoral system by allowing greater transparency.

ABEC added that the new boxes include tamper-evident features designed to protect the integrity of the ballots inside.

Despite the move to transparent boxes, the commission said the voting process remains secret, secure and confidential.
