Education, Sports and Creative Industries Minister Daryll Matthew has called for stronger collaboration between the private sector and the music industry, urging businesses in Antigua and Barbuda to support cultural initiatives while also encouraging artists and organizers to maintain high professional standards.

Speaking during the National Music Awards ceremony Tuesday night, Matthew acknowledged that the corporate community is often criticized for not providing sufficient sponsorship for cultural and entertainment events.

“A lot of times we criticize the corporate community here in Antigua and Barbuda for not stepping up to the plate and supporting different initiatives,” Matthew said. “Sometimes we criticize without appreciating the challenges they may be facing.”

The minister noted that private sector support remains vital to the continued growth of the country’s music industry, particularly for events, productions and initiatives that promote local talent.

At the same time, Matthew said artists and organizers must also ensure that the projects they present to potential sponsors are of a professional standard.

“We seek their support sometimes without accepting that the product that we’re selling is not worthy of being bought because of how we’re presenting it,” he said.

Matthew stressed that a stronger partnership between creatives and the corporate sector would help elevate Antigua and Barbuda’s music industry and provide greater opportunities for artists.

The National Music Awards ceremony recognized performers, producers and industry stakeholders who have contributed to the development of Antigua and Barbuda’s music sector, while also highlighting the importance of continued investment in the country’s cultural industries.
